Large-scale oil paintings exploring light, emotion, and nature.
My current work focuses on large-scale oil paintings, which explore the possibilities of abstraction in relation to land- and sky-scapes. Through flying my hawk, I’ve been increasingly captivated by the sense of opposing forces revealed when she becomes most herself within her natural element: the sky. Light and darkness, the magnetism of the infinite, the sense of returning home to earth: a hawk is an emissary between the numinous or spiritual dimension and the acutely visceral, which makes her both inspiration and natural guide. As a human, we inhabit those liminal places, neither fully one nor the other, which I find endlessly fascinating.

By a process of rapid building-up and stripping back of oil-paint, these pieces aim to convey the emotional resonance of remembered landscapes. Often painted in my studio in the south, they are also a form of ‘hiraeth’ – an untranslatable Welsh word suggestive of love and longing for home.
“Making a mark in paint is a definite act of hope and belief: hope that the work resonates with another person; belief that it is anyway worth the attempt.”
Painting among the trees in the early light I find both profoundly restorative and full of surprises – the sense that the entire year’s stash of colours is latent within the forest.
As any islander will confirm, the skies above Anglesey transform the landscape a few times every day, revealing and concealing, sharpening and softening familiar stretches of coastline. My Anglesey landscapes are always painted en plein air and usually alla prima, before the light changes everything I thought was true.
